(Datos procedentes de la base de datos científica de The Colaborative on Health and the Environment)

(Datos procedentes de the Collaborative on Health and the Environment)

ENGLISH VERSION (Google translation)

The metals in sludge can cause a long series of illnesses, including different types of cancer

As often happens, every time there is an ecological catastrophe, we attended the same ritual. First the media inundate us with dramatic images of a spill, in this case about one million cubic meters of "red mud" in Hungary. Then, the authorities of trying to "downplay" the thing thin. Hide the true extent of the risks.

However, the reality is more complex than many people may think. In general, people who follow the media are bombarded by spectacular headlines having to do with the first effects, the most visible, of a disaster. But rarely, they learn to real awareness that something can have serious long-term efffects.

In this case, which are toxic sludge has been discharged from the process for obtaining alumina from bauxite. Alumina is an oxide of aluminum which is used to produce aluminum and for certain industrial chemical processes.

The spill occurred from a Ajkai Tímfolfyar MAL waste pond , which contained extremely acidic waters and sludge, red from iron oxide content, but also contained other hazardous metals.

The Fodesam Believe That Should warn the Hungarian Government to the Affected people in a correct way, clean the area (the company Must to pay the money) and Evaluate the long-term health effects.

According to analysis by the Federal Environment Agency of Austria in Vienna, and the Balintl aboratory  in Budapest for Greenpeace, which collected samples on the day after discharge, those soils contain high levels of certain problematic metals . For example, have twice the arsenic that is typical in this kind of sludge. They also have high levels of mercury and chromium.

The risks arising from the persistence of substances in soil and water well are obvious. However, the Hungarian authorities are striving to silence these aspects and television stations that reach reassuring news to reach the Danube from the River Raba, the concentrations have fallen. Sure! As they will not fall if the Danube carries more water!. However, even the Danube and its living beings, including humans that are supplied by the water or living things that draw them, not benefit them, albeit more or less subtle forms that take a long time to assess. In addition, that this is just one of many releases that have received this river that gradually builds up in the mud a growing number of things.

But is that in the most directly affected area, where those sludge will persist, and where will obviously now have high levels of these pollutants, the effects can be much more evident. Both on the water as on land, and even through the air, as the dust that people inhale there will from now on will have a different composition than before the spill.

EFFECTS OF ARSENIC

Here is a brief review of various health problems that have been linked to arsenic in scientific studies. With strong evidence: angiosarcoma (liver), arrhythmias, bladder cancer, contact dermatitis, type II diabetes, hearing loss, hyperkeratosis, lung cancer, peripheral neuropathy, skin cancer (not melanoma) , ulcerations in the skin. With a goog load of evidence: adult leukemia, alopecia, anemia (including hemolytic), aplastic anemia, chronic bronchitis, cardiomyopathy, congenital malformations, coronary artery disease, fetotoxicity, liver cancer, hypertension, hepatoportal sclerosis, cirrhosis, low birth weight, myocardial infarction, nasal septum perforation, neural tube defects, pneumonitis (hypersensitivity), Raynaud's phenomenon, kidney cancer, skeletal malformations and fatty liver. And with somewhat less strength of evidence: acute tubular necrosis, cognitive impairment, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, genitourinary abnormalities in men and women, suppression of immunity, metal fume fever, myelodysplastic syndrome (preleukemia) and uterine cancer. (Data from the scientific database of The Colaborative on Health and the Environment)

As Greenpeace has reported, based on the analysis performed by the agency cited, have been measured 110 mg / kg (milligrams per kilogram or parts per million (ppm) of arsenic, or whatever it is, taking into account the volume of sludge disposal, no less than fifty tons of arsenic.

They are also high levels of 1.3 mg / kg of mercury and 660 mg / kg of chromium measured.

EFFECTS OF MERCURY

Mercury, when converted into methyl mercury, once released into the environment, can accumulate dramatically in the food chain.

There is strong scientific evidence of the following risks of mercury: acute tubular necrosis, behavioral problems, acute bronchitis, cerebral palsy, cognitive impairment (including learning disabilities, memory problems and decreased attention span) / Mental Retardation / Developmental Delay in development, contact dermatitis, decreased coordination, hearing loss, Minamata disease, peripheral neuropathy, pneumonitis (hypersensitivity), psychiatric disorders (disorientation, hallucinations, psychosis, delusions, paranoia, anxiety / depression, emotional lability, changes mood, euphoria), seizures, and spasticity. There is good evidence: a change in sex ratio, anemia (including hemolytic anemia), aplastic anemia, autoimmune antibodies, chronic kidney disease, birth defects, coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, atherosclerosis, decreased vision (including blindness, retinopathy, optic neuropathy), stunting, fetotoxicity (abortions, fetal deaths), glomerulonephritis, immunosuppression, low birth weight, menstrual disorders (abnormal bleeding, short cycles, long cycles, irregular cycles, painful periods) , neural tube defects / CNS malformations, pneumonia and pulmonary edema. With a more limited base of evidence: Lou Gehrig's disease, brain tumor, erectile dysfunction, hormonal disorders, hypertension, myocardial infarction, nephrotic syndrome, neurostenia, pulmonary fibrosis, reduced fertility in women or men, kidney cancer , scleroderma and thyroid disorders (such as hypothyroidism). (Data from the Collaborative on Health and the Environment)

Given all this evidence, the Fodesam want to know, first, whether the Hungarian authorities will warn people who may be exposed to the sludge of these risks, to protect themselves. Second, if they will make an appropriate cleaning of the mud, which we believe ought to be paid by the company (which by the way, is denying responsibility.) Third, if they will monitoring the health impact of this spill over the coming years.

In addition, we have not even mentioned the possible effects of other substances that are or may be present in those sludges, according to various sources: lead, chromium, titanium, lead, manganese, ...

Unfortunately, the general trend does not inspire great optimism. Just remember what happened in Spain in 1998 when at the  Aznalcóllar mines (Sevilla, Spain) when poured over 5 million cubic meters of toxic sludge from a tailings pond, affecting more than 4,500 hectares, including part of the Doñana Park. The company sidestepped liability at the court , and not only did not pay the cleanup and recovery (which exceeded 200 million euros of investment, with money from all the Spanish) but it took government subsidies after the spill and eventually fired workers. Subsequent to the discharge the Spanish authorities have worked to mute the effects they may be having the metals, including arsenic (despite cleaning) persist in the soils of the area.

Spain has hundreds of mining dams, many of them in a considerable state of disrepair.

A fémek iszap okozhat hosszú sora betegségek, beleértve a különböző típusú rákos

Ezután a hatóságok próbálják "lekicsinyelni" a dolog vékony. Elrejteni a valódi mértékét a kockázatok.

Persze!

A terhelés bizonyíték: felnőtt leukémia, alopecia, anaemia (beleértve a hemolitikus), aplasztikus anaemia, krónikus bronchitis, cardiomyopathia, születési rendellenességek, koszorúér-betegség, fetotoxicitás, májrák, magas vérnyomás, sclerosis hepatoportal, cirrhosis, alacsony születési súly, szívinfarktus, orrsövény perforáció, velőcsőzáródási rendellenességek, tüdőgyulladás (túlérzékenység), Raynaud-jelenség, veserák, csontrendszeri rendellenességek és a hízott máj.

Mercury, amikor át a metil-higany, miután a környezetbe, felhalmozódhat drasztikusan a táplálékláncban. Nincs meggyőző tudományos bizonyítékok a következő kockázatok higany: akut tubuláris nekrózis, viselkedési problémák, akut bronchitis, bénulás, kognitív zavar (beleértve a tanulási nehézségekkel küzdő, a memória problémákat, és csökkent a figyelmet span) / mentális retardáció / Retardáció A fejlesztés, kontakt dermatitisz, csökkent koordináció, halláscsökkenés, Minamata betegség, perifériás neuropátia, tüdőgyulladás (túlérzékenység), pszichiátriai betegségek (dezorientáció, hallucinációk, pszichózis, téveszmék, paranoia, szorongás / depresszió, érzelmi labilitás, változások hangulat, eufória), görcsök, és izommerevség.
